Pokémon SAR Card:
What is a Special
Art Rare?
SAR. Three letters that drive up bids on Cardmarket, spark cheers in unboxing videos, and that many collectors struggle to distinguish from classic ARs. This guide explains exactly what a Special Art Rare is, why it's worth more than a standard AR, which SAR Pokémon are highly sought after, and how The Lucky Hand guarantees you one.
What is a SAR (Special Art Rare)?
Definition
Special Art Rare (SAR)
A Special Art Rare is a full-art alternative illustration of an EX, GX, V, Vmax, Vstar, or equivalent level Pokémon. Like an AR, it features a borderless illustration that covers the entire card surface. However, SARs are distinguished by the illustrated Pokémon — always a higher-power Pokémon — and by a more elaborate artistic treatment, often with complex narrative scenes, detailed backgrounds, or interactions between multiple characters.
The SAR was introduced in the Sword & Shield era (2020) and exploded in popularity with the Scarlet & Violet era (2023). The term "SAR" comes from the Japanese classification "Special Art Rare" — in English, these cards are also simply called "premium Art Rare" or "Alt Art EX/GX." In the French community, SAR has become the standard abbreviation.
The Art Rare Family: AR, SAR, Hyper Rare
SARs are part of a larger family of full-art cards. Understanding the differences helps to better assess their value:
AR
AR — Alternative Rare
Full-art illustration of a Pokémon of any level — from common to rare. An AR can depict a Pikachu, a Jigglypuff, or an Eevee in a particular artistic context. This is the basic form of the family.
Value: €5 – €80 depending on the Pokémon
SAR
SAR — Special Art Rare
Full-art illustration reserved for EX, GX, V, Vmax, Vstar Pokémon. SARs always illustrate a higher-power Pokémon in a more elaborate narrative scene. Statistically rarer than a standard AR, and generally more valuable.
Value: €20 – €300+ depending on the Pokémon
Hyper Rare
Hyper Rare — SAR + gold treatment
The ultimate combination: a full-art illustration at the SAR level with an entirely gold treatment, like a Gold Rare. The Hyper Rare is the absolute pinnacle of the Pokémon TCG in terms of rarity and value in recent expansions.
Value: €100 – €500+ depending on the Pokémon

How to distinguish a SAR from a classic AR
At first glance, a SAR and an AR look similar — both feature a full-art illustration. The differences are subtle but systematic:
AR — Alternative Rare
Pokémon of any level (common to rare)
Artistic scene, often simple or portrait
Rarity symbol: ◆◆◆◆ (4 diamonds)
No EX/GX/V mention on the card
Median value: €5 – €25
SAR — Special Art Rare
EX, GX, V, Vmax, Vstar Pokémon only
Elaborate narrative scene, often with background
Rarity symbol: ◆◆◆◆◆ (5 diamonds)
EX/GX/V mention visible on the card
Median value: €30 – €150
The most reliable sign: look at the bottom-right corner of the card. A standard AR has 4 diamonds (◆◆◆◆). A SAR has 5 (◆◆◆◆◆). This is the quickest way to distinguish the two — and it applies to all Scarlet & Violet expansions.

How much is a Pokémon SAR worth in 2026?
SARs are among the cards with the widest value dispersion in the TCG. From €20 for a less popular Pokémon to several hundred for a first-generation EX, here are the ranges observed on Cardmarket and eBay in early 2026:
Charizard EX SAR
Absolute icon
€80 – €250+
depending on condition and version
Pikachu EX SAR
Mascot Pokémon
€40 – €120
depending on condition
Gardevoir EX SAR
Highly sought after
€50 – €150
depending on condition
Mewtwo EX SAR
Classic Legendary
€30 – €90
depending on condition
Average popular EX
Standard series
€20 – €60
depending on condition
Less popular EX
Secondary Pokémon
€10 – €25
depending on condition
These values fluctuate. The SAR market is particularly sensitive to new expansions. When a new expansion is released, SARs of similar Pokémon from older expansions may decrease in value. Always check current prices on Cardmarket before buying with a resale objective.
Why SARs are so valuable
Several factors explain the premium value of SARs over classic ARs:
-
Superior statistical rarity — SARs have a drop rate of approximately 0.5% in a classic booster versus ~6% for a standard AR. The rarity is real, not just perceived.
-
The Pokémon is always strong and popular — a SAR must feature an EX, GX, V, or Vstar. These Pokémon are always competitive meta-game staples, which maintains long-term demand.
-
The narrative scene is more elaborate — artists dedicate more work to a SAR than to a standard AR. The backgrounds, interactions, and fine details make a SAR a work of art in its own right rather than just a portrait.
-
The "premium illustration × premium Pokémon" combination — this is the strongest value multiplier. A Charizard SAR combines the most popular Pokémon in TCG history with the most valued artistic treatment.
-
Grading performance — perfectly conditioned SARs are rare due to the intricacy of their printing. A Charizard SAR PSA 10 is a major collectible that regularly exceeds €500.
Drop rates and how to get one
In classic boosters, SARs represent about 0.5% of pulls — statistically, about one in 200 boosters, or 5-6 full displays. This level of rarity is what gives them their value. The Lucky Hand offers two boosters that allow access to them at a better rate. For all official rates, see our complete drop rate guide.

SAR and grading: what you need to know
SARs are among the best candidates for PSA grading in the modern Pokémon TCG. Here's why:
-
Sufficient base value — most SARs are worth between €30 and €150 ungraded, which justifies the grading fees at Pure Grading (€20-€28 all inclusive) or PSA (€60-€90).
-
Strong PSA 10 multiplier — a Charizard SAR in PSA 10 can be worth 3 to 8 times its ungraded price. For very popular Pokémon, the multiplier sometimes exceeds ×10.
-
Defect detection by full-art illustration — paradoxically, a SAR in perfect condition is rarer than a standard card in perfect condition, because the large illustrated surface makes every micro-scratch visible. An authentic PSA 10 SAR is therefore exceptional.
-
Strong international demand — graded SARs sell in all markets (eBay, Cardmarket, Yahoo Auctions Japan), which facilitates resale.

FAQ
What is a SAR Pokémon card?
SAR stands for Special Art Rare. It's a full-art card — borderless — depicting a higher-power Pokémon (EX, GX, V, Vmax, Vstar) in an elaborate narrative scene. SARs differ from classic ARs by the level of the Pokémon illustrated (always a strong Pokémon), the 5-diamond rarity symbol (vs 4 for an AR), and their generally higher value.
What is the difference between an AR and a SAR?
Both are full-art cards. The main difference: an AR can illustrate any Pokémon, while a SAR only illustrates EX, GX, V, or equivalent Pokémon. A SAR has a 5-diamond rarity symbol vs 4 for an AR, is statistically rarer, and is generally more expensive — especially for popular Pokémon like Charizard or Pikachu.
How many boosters do you need to open to get a Charizard SAR?
In a classic booster, SARs represent about 0.5% of pulls — roughly 1 in 200 boosters. A Charizard SAR in particular is even rarer, as it is the most sought-after among SARs. Statistically, you would need to open several hundred classic boosters to get one. THE ULTRA-RARE at The Lucky Hand guarantees it 100% for €44.99 — with no randomness on the minimum level.
Are SARs worth grading?
Yes, for SARs of popular Pokémon (Charizard, Pikachu, Gardevoir, Mewtwo). The base value justifies the grading fees, and the PSA 9-10 multiplier is among the highest in the TCG. A PSA 10 Charizard SAR can reach €500 or more, compared to €80-€150 ungraded. The difficulty: obtaining perfect condition on a large illustrated surface is rare, making PSA 10 SARs exceptional.
What is the most expensive SAR in 2026?
Charizard EX SARs from the Pale Fire or Scarlet & Violet expansions regularly top value rankings, with PSA 10 copies exceeding €500. Pikachu EX and Gardevoir EX SARs complete the podium. These rankings evolve with new expansions — check current prices on Cardmarket for real-time information.

The Charizard SAR card best summarizes why The Lucky Hand exists. The thrill of opening it is unmatched — but statistically, you could wait years before seeing one in a classic booster. THE ULTRA-RARE is the answer to that. Paris · 2024
