Pokémon AR Card:
Everything you need to know
about Alternative Rares

ARs — Alternative Rares — have become the most beloved cards by modern collectors in just a few years. Not the rarest in statistical terms, but the most beautiful, most sought-after, and most shared. This guide explains what an AR is, how to recognize one, why Japanese versions are particularly prized, and how The Lucky Hand allows you to get a guaranteed one from as little as €5.99.

What is an Alternative Rare (AR)?

Definition
Alternative Rare (AR)
An Alternative Rare is an alternate version of an existing Pokémon card, featuring a full-page illustration without the card's usual borders. The artwork covers the entire surface of the card — the Pokémon is depicted in a particular narrative or artistic context, often with a visual style distinct from the standard game. ARs come from Sword & Shield and Scarlet & Violet expansions — they did not exist in previous generations.

Before ARs, premium Pokémon TCG cards were mainly Full Art and Rainbow Rare — holographic treatments on a shiny background. The AR introduced a new paradigm: the illustration as a work of art in its own right, without the statistical rarity necessarily being extreme.

How to recognize an AR

Recognizing an AR among other cards is quite simple when you know what to look for:

Classic Pokémon Card
BackgroundSolid color with yellow borders
IllustrationFramed in a defined rectangle
PokémonCentered in the illustration area
TextName, HP, attacks visible
SurfaceStandard, sometimes partial holographic
Alternative Rare (AR)
BackgroundFull-page illustration, no border
IllustrationCovers the entire card surface
PokémonStaged in a narrative context
TextMinimalist, often integrated into the artwork
SurfaceFull holographic or premium textured

The most immediate sign: an AR is a card where you immediately see the complete illustration without being bothered by borders. It looks more like an art book illustration than a game card. This is precisely what makes it the collector's item it has become.

AR vs SAR: SAR (Special Art Rare) are an even more premium variant. An SAR also features a full-page illustration, but for an EX or higher power Pokémon, with an even more advanced artistic treatment. Both belong to the "Art Rares" family, but SARs are statistically rarer and generally more highly rated.

How much is a Pokémon AR card worth?

The value of an AR depends primarily on the Pokémon illustrated. A Pikachu AR or Eevee AR is worth ten times more than a secondary Pokémon AR — even if the artistic treatment is identical. Collector demand dictates the market.

Pikachu AR
Iconic Pokémon
€20 – €80
depending on version and condition
Eevee AR
Very popular
€15 – €50
depending on version and condition
Mewtwo AR
Classic Legendary
€12 – €35
depending on version and condition
Gardevoir AR
Highly sought after
€10 – €40
depending on version and condition
Average popular Pokémon
Standard Series
€5 – €20
depending on version and condition
Ordinary Pokémon
Low demand
€2 – €8
depending on version and condition
Prices fluctuate. The Pokémon card market is constantly evolving according to meta-games, popular Pokémon anniversaries, and new expansions. These ranges are indicative, based on Cardmarket in early 2026. Always check the current price before buying or selling.

What determines the value of an AR beyond the illustrated Pokémon: the condition of the card (centering, corners, surface), the version (Japanese often more highly rated), and whether the card has been graded. A Japanese Pikachu AR in PSA 10 can exceed €200 — compared to €30 for the same ungraded card in ordinary condition.

Why Japanese ARs are particularly sought after

Japanese ARs have a reputation that far exceeds French and English versions among serious collectors. This is not snobbery — there are objective differences:

01
Superior print quality
Japanese printers used by The Pokémon Company for local editions produce sharper holographies, more saturated colors, and more consistent surface finishes than European versions. On an AR, the difference is immediately visible — the Japanese card "pops" more under light.
02
Better statistical centering
Centering — the regularity of the margins around the illustration — is on average better on Japanese cards. This is a direct factor in grading valuation: PSA and BGS strongly penalize poor centering. A Japanese AR statistically has a better chance of getting a 9 or 10 than a French version.
03
Japanese exclusives
Some ARs only exist in Japanese versions — illustrations that will never be translated into French or English. For collectors who want certain cards, the Japanese version is the only option available.
04
Prestige in the collecting community
Japanese cards have a special status in the international Pokémon collecting community. Presenting a Japanese AR in a binder or on a grading table is perceived differently than a French version — it's subjective, but it's real and it's reflected in market prices.

AR drop rates per The Lucky Hand booster

ARs are not officially listed as a separate drop rate in classic boosters — they are part of Ultra-Rares or Rares depending on the version. At The Lucky Hand, two boosters specifically target ARs. For all drop rates in the range, consult our complete drop rate guide.

How to get a guaranteed AR

There are two ways to get an AR at The Lucky Hand, depending on your goal:

THE JUST-AR vs L'ORIGINAL JAP: both guarantee a minimum Japanese AR for a €1 difference. THE JUST-AR specifically targets the AR level — it's certainty. L'ORIGINAL JAP guarantees the same minimum but can go higher (Ultra-Rare, Legendary) — it's more potential but also more variance.

AR and grading: the winning combination

Japanese ARs are the cards that benefit the most from grading in terms of value/investment ratio. Here's why they are ideal candidates:

  • Sufficient base value — a popular AR is worth €15-€50 ungraded, which justifies grading costs (€20-€30 at Pure Grading)
  • Better Japanese centering — Japanese versions statistically have a better chance of a 9 or 10, maximizing the added value of grading
  • Strong value multiplier in PSA 9-10 — a Japanese Pikachu AR PSA 10 can be worth 5 to 8 times the price of an ungraded one
  • International demand — graded Japanese ARs sell on all markets (international eBay, Cardmarket, Yahoo! Auctions Japan)

FAQ

What is an AR in Pokémon cards?
An AR (Alternative Rare) is an alternative version of a Pokémon card with a full-page illustration without borders. The artwork covers the entire surface of the card, the Pokémon is depicted in a particular narrative context with a premium holographic finish. ARs appeared with the Sword & Shield era and have become among the most sought-after cards by modern collectors.
What is the difference between an AR and an SAR?
Both are full-page illustration cards. The SAR (Special Art Rare) is an even more premium version, generally reserved for EX or higher-level Pokémon, with a more elaborate artistic treatment and a higher statistical rarity. An SAR is always an AR in the broader sense, but the reverse is not true. SARs are generally more highly rated in the secondary market.
Why are Japanese ARs worth more?
Several objective reasons: superior print quality (sharper holography), better average centering (important for grading), existence of Japanese exclusives, and strong international demand. These combined factors mean that Japanese ARs consistently sell for more than their French equivalents on collector platforms.
How to get a guaranteed AR at The Lucky Hand?
THE JUST-AR (€5.99) guarantees a Japanese AR at 100% — it's the most accessible way. L'ORIGINAL JAP (€6.99) guarantees a minimum AR but can go higher. THE GOD PACK (€29.99) guarantees 5 Japanese ARs. THE GRADING (€34.99) delivers a Japanese AR already graded a minimum of 9 in its official slab.
Are ARs worth grading?
Yes, for Japanese ARs of popular Pokémon (Pikachu, Eevee, Mewtwo, Gardevoir...). With an ungraded value of €15-€50 and a PSA 9-10 multiplier of 3x to 8x, the calculation is often favorable. The Lucky Hand Japanese ARs are particularly interesting to grade due to their better average centering. Consult our complete guide on grading for details.
Can you subscribe to receive an AR every month?
Yes. THE JUST-AR X is available for €5.80/month on subscription — it's the most economical way to receive a guaranteed Japanese AR every month. The booster arrives on the 5th of the month directly in your mailbox, with loyalty points accumulation and cancellation at any time without notice.
