What is a HIT
in a Pokémon card?
You often hear about "HITs" in the Pokémon community, but nobody really explains it clearly. This guide covers everything: exact definition, types of hits, actual drop rates, and how to get one for sure — without spending a fortune.
The definition of a HIT
In Pokémon collector jargon, a HIT refers to any card whose rarity exceeds the standard "common" or "uncommon" level. Simply put: it's any card that has value — visually, financially, or both.
The term comes from English. It naturally became established in the French community. When a player opens a booster and finds a shiny or rare card, they say they "hit" — or they "pulled a hit."
The frustration many experience? Opening a €6 booster and getting 9 commons and 1 uninteresting uncommon. Technically, that's not a hit. It's precisely from this frustration that the concept of the Only Hit Booster was born at The Lucky Hand.
The different types of hits
Not all hits are equal. There's a real hierarchy, from most common to rarest:
The basic HIT — the illustrated uncommon
The minimum level. An uncommon card with a visual effect — reflection, texture, or slight shimmer. Little resale value, but visually superior. In our boosters, all cards are at least double rare - so an even higher level. This is the basis of the Only Hit promise.
The double Rare ★★ card
Recognizable by the black star. Holographic background, value between €0.50 and €5. They represent about 26% of pulls in a standard booster. In our boosters, all cards are at least double rare - so this level. This is the basis of the Only Hit promise.
The AR card — Alternative Rare
Among the most popular hits right now. Full-page illustrations, borderless, with exceptional artwork. Approximately 6% of pulls — between €5 and €50 depending on the Pokémon illustrated.
The Ultra Rare (UR) card
SAR, Gold Rare, Rainbow Rare... Resale value between €15 and €200+. Approximately 4% of pulls in a standard booster — or 1 in 25 chances.
The Legendary card
The Holy Grail of collectors. Charizard SAR, illustrated Pikachu, golden Lugia... Value often between €100 and several thousand euros. Probability: less than 0.1% — less than 1 in 1,000 chances.

The real drop rates
Here are the actual probabilities of pulling each type of hit in a standard Pokémon booster (Scarlet & Violet expansion, 2025-2026 data). These rates have been empirically calculated by the community over thousands of openings:
| Type of hit | Drop rate | 1 chance in… | Estimated value |
|---|---|---|---|
| HIT / Illustrated Uncommon | ~70% | 1.4 boosters | €0.10 – €1 |
|
Holographic Rare (★★) |
~26% | ~4 boosters | €0.50 – €5 |
| AR — Alternative Rare | ~6% | ~17 boosters | €5 – €50 |
| Ultra Rare (SAR, Gold…) | ~4% | ~25 boosters | €15 – €200 |
| Legendary | ~0.1% | ~1,000 boosters | €100 – several k€ |
Standard Booster vs. Only Hit Booster
The difference is fundamental. Here's the unfiltered reality:
The Only Hit Booster doesn't replace official boosters if you want to complete a competitive set — for that, you need all cards including commons. But if what matters to you is the opening experience and the certainty of finding something beautiful, the Only Hit is for you.
What is the value of a hit?
The value of a Pokémon hit varies enormously depending on three factors:
- The Pokémon illustrated — Charizard, Pikachu, and Mewtwo are consistently worth more than others, even at equal rarity
- The expansion — Hits from old, rare expansions are often more valued than new cards freshly printed in large quantities
- The card's condition — A "Mint" card can be worth 2 to 5 times more than a "Near Mint" with slight scratches. This is where grading makes all the difference

How to get a hit for sure
Option 1 — Official boosters
The traditional method. You buy a booster (~€6) and you hope. The problem: out of 10 classic boosters, you might not pull any interesting hits. This is the "luck tax" — and it's expensive.
Option 2 — Buying cards individually
On Cardmarket or Vinted, you buy the card you want directly. This is the most financially rational method. The downside: you completely lose the thrill of opening.
Option 3 — The Only Hit Booster
This is The Lucky Hand model. You pay to be certain of a hit, while keeping the surprise of the exact card. You know you're going to open something good. You just don't know what yet. It's the balance between certainty and thrill.
Our ranges go from THE JUST-HIT at €3.99 — guaranteed basic hit — up to THE LEGEND at €125 — guaranteed legendary card. In between, a whole range depending on the rarity level you're aiming for.
